Spring Semester
Hey Everyone! Spring Sports have begun :) Lacrosse started the first Tuesday we were back in school. Hardcore practices! But I love it so much so it’s always a good time. Our team has such great chemistry, which makes it that much more fun to play. For those of you who don’t know, I play two sports, lacrosse and soccer. Everyone thinks I’m crazy for playing to collegiate sports but I couldn't imagine my college experience without them. I played two sports in high school, soccer and lacrosse, and coming to a division three school it was made possible for me to play both. It’s really all about time management. If you are organized and planned your schedule around practices and games, then you'll do fine. I have a Monday night class so sometimes it gets tricky because I have class and practices/games at the same time. All the coaches at Alvernia make it mandatory for you to attend class before practice. They understand you are a STUDENT-athlete. Student being first. If anyone has any interest in meeting a coach during your tours or if you just want to meet him or her, feel free to ask admissions for more details! I also want to wish everyone the best of luck in the rest of their senior year, I understand that Seniorities will be hitting soon. Get you major projects done early, just so you don’t have to worry when you want to skip and go to the beach, like us new-jersee-ians do :) kloveyoubye! -Danielle
Back to School
Hey everyone! First week of classes.. and its already getting crazy... crazy good though. This semester my classes include Mondays,Wednesdays,Fridays- Italian2, Brave New Worlds, and on Monday Nights I have God, Science and Designer Genes. Tuesdays and Thursdays are my Occupational Therapy classes. REALLY COOL! I have Activities Analysis first and then Concepts and Theories (another OT class), then followed by Kinesiology. Last semester I started getting a little worried about Kinesiology, because i heard it was another Neuroscience class with anatomy. But i was mistaken, its more of describing how the bones and joints and muscles move in realation to one another. The professor is pretty cool too, Dean Bertotti. She LOVES teaching the class and is super approachable. Any problem you might have, you can definatly go to her for help. So far (second week of classes)there arent any problems, which is good. Lacrosse started the second day of school and people think i'm crazy for playing two sports, being an ambassador, and being an OT major, maybe i am.. but i love it. I always have time to go out with my friends and eat my Panera Bread :). I love getting involved in things at school, i love making this school something personal to me. My advice to all the incoming freshmen is to get as involved as you can because it makes your adjustment to college so much easier. Get involved in as many activites, sporting events, clubs, or community service as you can. Just a reminder if there is anyone out there who wants to ask me questions feel free to leave me a post on here with you email and i WILL write back! kbye!! :)
Finals
So all my classes are finally over and this week finals begin. I have two on Monday (statistics and Italian) one on Tuesday (Activities Analysis) and Thursday (neuroscience). Even though I should have been studying all weekend, there were too many activities going on campus. Friday night was Christmas on Campus, sponsored by Student Government Assoc. In this event many clubs on campus set up tables and do crafts with children from schools in Reading. The children come in on buses and get paired up with an Alvernia Student for the night. They go around from table to table and get to do different crafts. Towards the end of the night, SANTA comes out! The children get to talk to Santa and tell him what they want for Christmas, then they go to the elves (I was one of the elves this year) and receive stickers and a coloring book and some other little things. After the visiting was over, Santa read us the Night Before Christmas...For the two years I've been to Alvernia, I have loved this activity every time! It's such a great experience for the kids and students to get involved it. This weekend there was also a really fun event sponsored by the group of students going to Santo Domingo in January for a service trip. Since the beginning of the semester a few of the students have been carrying around pink piggy banks, collecting money for their trip. Finally after two and a half months, a winner was selected for having the most money. Each student had a professor "sponsor" them. Which means, if their student won, they had to KISS A PIG! Dr. Godfrey, a theology professor had kissed a pig named, Hatfield on Saturday, at half time in the basketball game. I just couldn't pass up all the fun activities going on!! :) Happy Holidays Everyone! - Danielle P.S: If anyone ever has any questions please feel free to comment on my blog page and leave your email address and I will be sure to write to you! :)
Hey Everyone! This week has been sooo hectic, even though my soccer season has sadly ended; I still manage to keep busy. We lost our last game to Albright in the last minutes of double overtime. Our overall record was the best yet, 7 wins, 7 losses, and 2 ties. I can't wait until next year to improve our record even more. Being an Occupational Therapy major, one of my favorite classes this year is Activity Analysis. In this class, taught by Dr. Cameron, we play games outside (volleyball, kickball, and soccer), draw with chalk, and paint with watercolors. This class is one of my favorites just because it makes all my friends who aren't OTs sooo jealous. They see us "playing" outside and don't understand how it is REAL class. I explain to them that in being an OT, playing will be part of my job. Especially with children, playing games or playing with other children, is their "main occupation". After each activity there is plenty of work that goes along with it, we analyze every little movement that went on in order to complete the task. We figure out what type of muscles, different grasps, different maneuvers etc. go into performing that task successfully. It is very tedious but in the long run will be worth it when helping clients. Even though it is a very detailed class, its one of my most interesting this semester. :) love, Danielle
First Post
Hi Future Alvernians! My name is Danielle Fitzpatrick and I'm a sophomore at Alvernia College...My home town is Old Bridge, New Jersey (a little town south of Rutgers New Brunswick Campus). Going into the summer of my senior year in high school, Alvernia actually found me and everything just seemed to click. It was the last school I applied to (out of 12), and before the soccer coach found me at a local tournament I had never heard of the school. I came to visit and found out because it is a division three school I was allowed to play soccer AND lacrosse. I also found out they had my major, Occupational Therapy as a five year masters program (which is now necessary to get any entry level OT jobs). Everything just seemed too good to be true, so I had to see the campus. My tour was great and I felt a great sense of community at the school, and that was what was missing at all the other schools I had visited. I'm very happy with my choice in going to Alvernia!
