End of the Semester!

Well, sorry it has been so long since my last post, I have been very busy! This week is finals week, I have one more final to go! I had two finals on Monday, two Tuesday, and my last one is on Friday! Finals week is always a stressful time on campus, but the Office of Student Activties provides many stress-relief activties for all the students. Monday , we had milk & cookies with live music, and last night was late night breakfast. I attended late night breakfast with many of my friends, the faculty and adminstrators cook breakfast for the student body from 9-11:30! It is a great time to take a break from the books and fill up your stomach.

Today, was "study day." No one has finals, and everyone is given the day to catch up with their studies and maybe get some sleep. I was lucky enough to be ahead for my final on Friday, so I took a nap and hung out with some friends. This morning I also had the RA Banquet at Shady Maple. The RA Banquet was a breakfast for RA's where they thanked us for our hard work and gave out some awards.

I am extremely excited for winter break! I can't wait to catch up with my family and friends from high school. I don't have too much planned for the break, but I am sure I will end up being busy. Classes begin January 20th! I leave earlier that week for Washington DC, to attend a leadership conference called Campaign 2008: Presidential Academic Seminar Series. There are 5 other students from Alvernia attending, and this is a once in a life time opportunity, we are even attending the inauguration!

I hope everyone enjoys the holiday, please feel free to post comments or email me at butl9892@alvernia.edu The spring semester is really a great time to come out and visit us, do an overnight stay, shadow classes, or even just a day tour! Hope to see you around!

Happy Holidays!

Excitement of the Holiday!

Campus has been hustling with the holiday spirit as students prepare for Thanksgiving break! This week there have been many activities for the holidays going on around campus.
This Friday we had the Winter Formal which I attended with my friends! There was a great turn out, it was nice to see everyone all dressed up, because I am used to seeing a majority of people in sweatpants in class! There was an excellent DJ, as well as delicious food and dessert.

On Thursday, we had an event for my Activity Analysis I Occupational Therapy class. As part of the class requirements, my class had to work together to plan a holiday card making event! This required a lot of work and planning for myself and all of my peers. This event was held in the Cafe, and open to all students. We had raffle prices for any student who made a card which would be sent to elderly shut-ins, soldiers in Iraq, or veterans. Some of the raffles included Hollywood Tans membership, Applebee's gift card, Alvernia University bookstore gift card, Subway gift cards, and much more! Our class went above and beyond our goal, and we had over 400 cards made! The photo on the right is my Activity Analysis class that planned the holiday card making event.
Also on Thursday, The Office of Student Activities had a "free photo snow globe" event. All students had the opportunity to take their photo taken in front of a holiday scene with their friends which was then made into a snow globe! This is just one of the many free novelties that kicked off the holiday season.

I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving! I am heading home to my family on Wednesday after class, classes resume again on Monday!

Great News!

Campus is hustling with the business of each and every student! Classes are slowly coming to an end, as Thanksgiving break is almost here and winter break is right around the corner! I have been very busy with Student Government this semester, as the Executive Board Vice President we have been doing a lot of changes "behind the scenes." We are also planning our annual Christmas on Campus event and other holiday events.

This weekend is the Winter Formal. I am very excited to dance the night away with my friends, and enjoy the elegant appetizers. The Winter Formal, gives the student body a chance to spiff up, grab a date, and have some fun on the dance floor!

Several weeks ago I received some great news! I was selected as the student leader for the Alternative Spring Break trip to El Salvador. Last year I attended El Salvador for the first time, and I was blown away. We did several different types of service projects as well as explored the land of El Salvador and it's culture! Alvernia offers a variety of Alternative Break trips each year, for more information check out the Campus Ministry website: CLICK HERE Planning has been a lot of work for this trip, and I am excited to experience it from a whole new perspective this coming Spring. Below are some pictures from last year's trip!

Craziness

It's November 1st, October flew by! This first semester is coming to an end very rapidly. Things here at the vern have been very busy. We have had many events on campus this week such as Trick-or-treat night, The One Campaign, The Gold Rush, and of course other Halloween festivities.

Trick-or-treat night is an opportunity for all the residence halls on campus to decorate the halls, for children from Reading to come to trick-or-treating. My building choose the theme of Peter Pan, and some how I got nominated as Peter! This event got my whole building involved, a made our lounge look like never land! The picture to the right are two of the pirates! This opportunity gave the students community service hours if they participated. Community service hours are important here at Alvernia because you need 40 hours to graduate. Service is a big part of our Franciscan identity.

On Wednesday I registered for my classes for next semester. I think I will have a big work load. I am taking Kinesology, Occupatioal Therapy Theories, and Activtiy Analysis to name a few. This week was Halloween, so of course everyone on campus celebrated. My friends and I went to Shocktober Fest, which is a haunted house attraction about ten minutes from here. We also went to a dance club in Allentown the night before Halloween!

It's Midterm Time!

Welcome prospective students! It's just around midterm, students have buckled down, and classes are in full swing. I have had two midterm exams thus far, and I have two more to go! This weekend is Homecoming & Family Weekend, so I am pretty excited for all the events that will be going on around campus. Last night I went to a guest lecture which was part of the Literary Festival for my Occupational Therapy Activity Analysis class. His name was Dan Keplinger, who was the star of his documentary "King Gimp." His lecture was very motivating and gave many of the Occupational Therapy students a great outlook on our future profession.

We are no longer Alvernia College, but ALVERNIA UNIVERSITY! A special announcement took place about two weeks ago, and all Alvernia University students received free t-shirts as President Dr. Flynn revealed the new Alvernia University logo. The picture above is SGA President Margot Allen, and myself, the SGA Vice President at the university announcement.

Be sure to check out my blog next week for pictures from Homecoming and an update on my week! Feel free to leave comments/questions!
