Constitution
Article I – Name
The name of the organization shall be the Sport Management
Association of Alvernia College, hereafter referred to as the SMA.
Article II – Mission Statement
The mission of the SMA is to promote sport and the field of sport management,
to support Alvernia College student-athletes, to provide educational experiences
and career training opportunities, and to embody and advance the mission
of Alvernia College, “to learn, to love, to serve”, by enriching
the lives of youth in the Reading and surrounding areas through sport.
Article III – Membership
The SMA shall be open to any Alvernia College undergraduate or graduate student
who is interested in sport.
Article IV – Officers & Elections
Section 1. The officers of the SMA shall be the president, vice-president,
treasurer, historian, and secretary. These officers, in addition to the faculty
advisor, shall constitute the executive committee. Officers shall be elected
at the first meeting of the school year and will hold their elected position
for one year.
Section 2. In the event that an elected officer resigns their office, that
position will be filled by a vote at the next regularly scheduled meeting.
Section 3. The SMA shall have a faculty advisor who is a member of the business
department and who will oversee the growth and development of the organization.
Article V – Duties of Officers
Section 1. The president shall a) preside over all meetings, b) appoint all
committees and serve as head of those committees, and c) promote the growth
and development of the SMA.
Section 2. The vice-president shall a) preside in the absence of the president,
and b) assist the president.
Section 3. The treasurer shall a) act as custodian of the SMA funds, and b)
give financial reports at all meetings.
Section 4. The historian shall a) maintain records of the organization, and
b) along with the secretary, publish the SMA newsletter.
Section 5. The secretary shall a) keep an accurate record of the SMA and committee
meetings, and b) along with the historian, publish the SMA newsletter.
Section 6. The SMA officers and the faculty advisor shall serve as the executive
committee and perform such duties as directed by the president and the faculty
advisor, not to be inconsistent with this document.
Article VI – Meetings
Section 1. There shall be two meetings per month, with the first meeting in
September being designated as the annual meeting for the purpose of electing
officers.
Section 2. Quorum – one third of the active SMA membership shall constitute
a quorum.
Article VII - Committees
Section 1. The president, in consultation with the faculty advisor, may appoint
the following committees: a) Nominating, b) Auditing, c) Social, and d) Fundraising.
The president shall appoint additional committees as authorized and defined
by the Executive Committee.
Article VIII – Amendments
Amendments to this document shall be submitted in writing at a regular meeting
and shall not be voted on until the following regularly scheduled meeting.
A two thirds vote of active SMA members shall be required for adoption.
