Psychology
in Action
Psychology related activities at Alvernia extend beyond the classroom. Other
avenues which allow students interested in psychology to get together to share
common intellectual, recreational, professional and service interests are the
Psychology Club and Psi Chi. The Psychology Club is a recognized organization
of Student Government. Its membership is open to all members of the Alvernia
community. The club sponsors lectures, career talks, get-togethers, Christmas
on Campus, and service projects at area agencies.
Alvernia has its own chapter of the National Honor Society in Psychology,
Psi Chi. The criteria for becoming a member are available from the department.
Psi Chi sponsors speakers on campus and organizes trips to psychology
conventions and informal discussion groups to discuss graduate work and
careers in psychology. Our students have had the opportunity to spend
a semester in Washington D.C. through the Washington Experience program,
working closely with policy makers and researchers.
Goals of the Program
Psychology is the scientific study of behavior, thoughts and feelings.
The courses in the Psychology Department are designed to serve three
groups of students: (1) those who wish to broaden their knowledge of
human behavior for the purpose of self-understanding and intellectual
enrichment; (2) those who will apply the knowledge and critical thinking
skills of science in careers including teaching, health professions,
social work, and business and industry; and (3) those who are preparing
to do graduate work in psychology and/or work in the field of psychology.
