The Department of Psychology & Counseling is dedicated to the ideals of service in the
helping professions and the goal of seeking knowledge through scientific
research. Students pursue a B.A. in Psychology, or a dual major
in relevant areas such as Social Work, Criminal Justice, English or Addiction Studies.
The department prepares students to enter the professions and/or graduate
school in various areas. Students spend two semesters in a practicum
in which they learn from and contribute to important work done in community
agencies and in the private sector. The students also make important
career connections in the process.
One of the special features of an Alvernia education is the opportunity
to work closely with one or more faculty members. Faculty members serve
as mentors for students in the completion of their senior theses, and
students work collaboratively with faculty members on a variety of research
projects.
