Alvernia is a Franciscan, Catholic university dedicated to the ideals of service in the helping professions. The Secondary Education program combines a sound liberal arts background with field work and studies in human growth and development, curriculum, methods, and materials. Approved by the Pennsylvania State Department of Education, the program prepares students for certification to teach in secondary schools.

Secondary Education students select a concentration, which is considered a second major, for certification from the following disciplines:
