Dr. David Silbey is Assistant Professor of European History. He attended Cornell University and St. Peter's College, Oxford, for his Bachelor of Arts degree, and graduated from Cornell in 1990. Dr. Silbey earned an MA and Ph.D in European and Military History at Duke University in Durham, N.C..

His dissertation, "Eagerly to Their Graves like Beds: The British Working Class and Enthusiasm for War, 1898-1914," looked at the role of popular consent in warfare and how national populations come to fight for their state. His current research interests focus on the rise of total war in the 19th and 20th centuries. He has taught at Duke, North Carolina State University, and Bowdoin College in Maine.
