School nurses play a significant role in promoting health and wellness among the student population of a school. Their role includes teaching students about health and safety, assist students and their families to understand the connection between health and learning, and dealing with health and injury problems that take place in the school.

Alvernia University's Program in School Health leading to a Master of Education with School Nurse Certification fully integrates national standards of the Standards of Professional School Nurse Practice and Standards of Professional School Nurse Practice: Applications in the Field.  Students can increase their marketability with this program because they can graduate with both their Master of Education and School Nurse Certification at the same time. The curriculum is designed so that students can demonstrate knowledge and professional skills for providing health care needs to children and youth in grades K through 12.

Mary Ann Razzano, M.Ed. ’10

“I have been a school nurse for ten years, and Alvernia University has provided the opportunity for me to obtain a Bachelor’s in Nursing, School Nurse Certification. Now I am enrolled in the Program in School Health Services leading to a Master of Education.

The program has helped me enhance both my skills as a school nurse and the education necessary for advancement in my career. Of course, my achievements wouldn't have happened if it wasn't for the expert assistance and advice of faculty and staff.”
