Alvernia’s high quality 27-credit program helps you attain a Pennsylvania Department of Education approved Special Education Teaching Certification in a convenient online format. The courses include:

MED 505: Introduction to Individuals with Special Needs (Required first course)
MED 515: Differentiated Instruction in Inclusive Classrooms
MED 535: Collaboration and Legal Issues in Special Education
MED 544: Transition & Instruction for Adolescents with Special Needs
MED 545: Social Development & Behavior Support
MED 605: Enhancing Literacy for Students with Special Needs
MED 522: Practicum (30 hours)
MED 542: Assessment & Instruction of Students with Developmental Disabilities
MED 523: Practicum (30 hours)

Online courses could be completed in a year. When courses are completed a seven week student teaching experience is arranged as the required culminating activity leading to Pennsylvania certification. The required Special Education certification tests for Pennsylvania candidates can be found on their website. Please note that Alvernia has a post-baccalaureate Special Education Teaching Certification as both Pre K-8 Special Education and 7-12 Special Education. Both  Pre K-8 and 7-12 require a completed Instructional I Certification as part of the admissions materials. The certifications are available in both traditional (face-to-face) and fully online formats.
