ESL Program Specialist (Grades K-12)

The English as a Second Language Program Specialist curriculum is 16 credits. The Education faculty uses various course formats to help you learn, including case studies, lecture/discussion, group projects and simulation exercises to ensure what you gain in one course will reinforce and build on what you learn in others.

Note: Up to 6 graduate credits earned at another institution may be accepted for the Alvernia equivalent below at the discretion of the department.

English as a Second Language Program Specialist: Curriculum Requirements

All clearances (FBI Fingerprint check, Criminal Record, and Child Abuse Clearance) must be submitted to the Department Secretary before students will be permitted to participate in field work. 

  • MED 574: Foundations of English as a Second Language (Includes 10 hours of fieldwork) - 3 credits
  • MED 576: Introduction to Linguistics - 3 credits
  • MED 578: Culture and Life Experiences of English Language Learners (Includes 5 hours of fieldwork) - 3 credits
  • MED 682: Second Language Acquisition (Includes 5 hours of fieldwork) - 3 credits
  • MED 684: Assessment and Instruction of English Language Learners - 4 credits
    (Includes a 40 hour internship; all other courses must be completed before this course is taken)

To apply for PA teaching certification, students must have completed all required coursework, with a Grade Point Average of 3.0 or higher, and submitted their application on the Teacher Information Management System on the Pennsylvania Department of Education website.
