Claire Child, Assistant Professor of Physical Therapy

Claire Child, PT, DPT, MPH, CCS has been teaching in the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program at Alvernia University since January 2017, where she is in charge of the cardiopulmonary physical therapy educational track. She became an Assistant Professor of Physical Therapy in August 2017. She brings to her teaching a wealth of knowledge and high-level experience in the practice of cardiovascular and pulmonary physical therapy, as well as an ABPTS clinical specialist certification in Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Physical Therapy (CCS), obtained in 2014. Dr. Child graduated with a Doctorate of Physical Therapy (DPT) from the Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professions, located in Boston, MA, in 2011. She subsequently completed a Masters of Public Health (MPH) with a concentration in health care policy and management at the T.H. Chan Harvard School of Public Health in 2012.

Dr. Child also works for Good Shepherd Penn Partners as an acute care physical therapist at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. She enjoys treating, collecting data, and driving quality and process improvements in patients with advanced lung disease, patients after heart and lung transplants, as well as patients in critical care settings on mechanical circulatory support and other forms of life support. She is involved in multiple hospital-wide quality improvement projects that use mobility to address risk factors for falls and other adverse events.

Dr. Child is an active member and leader in the Pennsylvania Physical Therapy Association (PPTA), where she sits on the Practice and Research Committee and chairs the Abstract Review workgroup that reviews submitted research abstracts for the PPTA Annual Conference.


Effective November 12, 2014, Alvernia University has been granted Candidate for Accreditation status by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (1111 North Fairfax Street, Alexandria, VA, 22314; phone: 703-706-3245; email: accreditation@apta.org). Candidacy is not an accreditation status nor does it assure eventual accreditation. Candidate for Accreditation is a pre-accreditation status of affiliation with the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education that indicates the program is progressing toward accreditation.
