The Alvernia College English curriculum encourages
critical thinking, clear organization and expression of ideas, and
the development of problem-solving abilities. It provides opportunities
for self-knowledge and growth as students explore the ideas of great
writers of the past and present.
The English program offers excellent preparation for graduate school
or for careers in law, management, journalism, public relations, marketing,
teaching, library science, or government service. Majors in English
complete either the pre-professional sequence or the English/secondary
education sequence which, when combined with education courses, prepares
students to teach on the secondary level. |

English majors are encouraged to spend a semester
interning at the Washington Center, a national internship program for
gaining practical experience by working in congressional offices, government
agencies, news networks, or agencies devoted to legal affairs, international
relations, or business and economic issues. In addition, they have
opportunities to intern with non-profit organizations working with the
environment,
women's issues, the arts, education, science, or labor relations.
Publications
The English/Communication Department is responsible for The Alvernian,
the student newspaper which is published every other week during the
academic year. Communication majors are required to work on the newspaper
during at least one semester of their college career. All students with
an interest in writing, photography, and/or marketing are encouraged
to contribute to the paper. Students may take COM132 Journalism Workshop
for one credit (course may be repeated) or COM432 Newspaper Production
for 3 credits (course may be repeated). Other students may gain credit
for community service.
The Alvernian office is located in Bernardine Hall 126. Equipment
includes computers, a laser printer, and a scanner. The paper is produced
on Aldus Pagemaker. Working on the student newspaper is an excellent
opportunity to become a part of the Alvernia community, hone one's writing
skills, and learn desktop publishing. Check out the latest online version
of The Alvernian.
The Zephyrus is the literary magazine published every other spring.
It contains original creative work--poetry, fiction, essays, photography,
artwork--by Alvernia students, staff and faculty. Department faculty serve
as advisors
and members of Sigma Tau
Delta act as editors.
Students and Alumni
Graduates of Alvernia's English program have gone on to graduate
school at universities including Villanova and The University of
Pennsylvania. They have been employed by Manhattan College, Parsons,
UGI Utilities, and the Reading Eagle-Times; by schools
and churches from Reading, PA to Tokyo, Japan; by public service
institutions and non-profit organizations including the American
Diabetes Association and Junior Achievement; and by private industry
in capacities ranging from management analyst to radio sportscaster. |
