Programs**The requirements listed below come from the 2003-2004 Catalog. Previous editions of the catalog are available online. The major in biochemistry is specially designed as an interdisciplinary program for those students with a strong interest in both biology and chemistry. The program prepares majors to enter graduate school in chemistry, biochemistry, pharmacology, or physiology; to pursue professional degrees in medicine, dentistry, or optometry; or to take chemical or pharmaceutical positions in industry. The programs of specialization in chemistry are designed to introduce students to the basic knowledge and skills essential to pursue careers in industrial and governmental research, medical technology, and secondary teaching. A chemistry major who chooses to undertake an emphasis in medical technology must complete one year of clinical study and experience at a school of medical technology approved by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratories (NAACLS) after satisfying the program requirements at Alvernia. All clinical year graduates become eligible to take the certification examination for medical technologist and, after successful completion, are entitled to use the designation M.T.(ASCF). Chemistry 63-66 credits Major: 41-44 credits Related Areas: 22 credits Chemistry Minor Chemistry Secondary Education Major: 31 credits Education Credits: 33 credits Related Areas: 39 credits Chemistry Medical Technology One year of clinical study and experience in a school of Medical Technology approved by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratories Sciences (NAACLS) follows the requirements listed above. Alvernia provides assistance in making application for admission to the clinical year program; however, admission is determined solely by the hospital. The college cannot guarantee all students will be accepted for the clinical year experience. All clinical year graduates will become eligible to take the certification examination for medical technologists and after successful completion will be entitled to use the designation M.T. (ASCP). Major: 49 credits Related Areas: 23 credits Clinical Experience and Study in Hospital Facility: Temple University Partnership Alvernia College in partnership with Temple University offers a unique opportunity for students to enter Temple’s School of Dental Medicine after completion of their third year at Alvernia College. Temple University will reserve spaces for qualified students and this enables the student to complete dental school one year earlier.
