ACT 101 / KEY Program The Alvernia College Act 101/KEY Program is designed to provide educational and developmental support to students whose academic records suggest they can succeed in college with support services such as academic and career counseling, financial aid assistance, and tutoring services. The mission of the program is to prepare learners for personal achievement, social responsibility, and moral integrity through critical thinking, careful research, perceptive analysis and above all, self-discipline. The purpose is to help students develop the initiative to take responsibility for their lives. Eligibility Admission to Alvernia College’s Act 101 program is offered to Pennsylvania residents who meet the academic and economic criteria established by the Higher Education Act of 1971. Eligible students must be high school seniors, high school graduates, or have obtained a GED. We encourage students to apply for financial aid by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is the standard financial aid application used to determine a student’s expected family contribution and Act 101 eligibility. History In 1971 Mr. K. Leroy Irvis, then Speaker of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives had a vision for the reformation of higher education in the Commonwealth. He recognized that there were many Pennsylvanians who were denied the opportunity to pursue higher education due solely to economics. His vision and leadership led the Pennsylvania legislature to establish the Higher Education Equal Opportunity Program (Act 101). This program makes post-secondary education possible for undergraduate students whose economic, educational, and cultural backgrounds might limit their success in achieving their career and life goals. Today, there are 76 institutions in the state of Pennsylvania that assist over 13,000 students with the support of the Act 101 legislation. In 2001, Alvernia College received assistance from the Higher Education Act of 1971 to help serve its most deserving students. The Act 101/KEY Program continues to assist students identify their personal strengths and weaknesses, establish responsibility for themselves, and develop their identity and work ethic as an adult.
