Academics - Business

Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE)
The Students in Free Enterprise organization is primarily an academic club, which engages in the promotion of free enterprise education in Berks County. The organization is comprised mostly of business related majors, but all students are welcome to become members and participate. The advisor, Dr. Tufan Tiglioglu, can be reached by email at tufan.tiglioglu@alvernia.edu or by telephone at 610-796-8278.

Working in partnership with business and higher education, SIFE establishes student teams on university campuses. These teams are led by faculty advisors, and they are challenged to develop community outreach projects that reach SIFE's five educational topics: Market Economics, Success Skills, Entrepreneurship, Financial Literacy, and Business Ethics.

Projects
The Alvernia College SIFE chapter is currently involved with the students of Southern Middle School and Southwest Middle School in Reading, Pa. The main focus of the groups is to engage, open up opportunities, and discussion for students to learn about common business practices, business ethics, and leadership skills. The experience that both the Alvernia students and SIFE participants have are amazing testaments to the significant impact a program like this has on today's youth. The development of entrepreneurial ideas is what drives the program. The children are encouraged to think of ways to make something new or better.

Rock Concert:
In 2007, the Alvernia SIFE chapter worked with Reading Southwest Middle School students to run an Entertainment Program, in which the middle schoolers were taught many different aspects of the entertainment world. The students used what they learned from SIFE to put on a rock concert. All the proceeds of the program were used for further improvements to the Reading community.

Olympic Day:
After working with the Alvernia College Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team for ten weeks, students from Southern Reading Middle School held the second annual “Olympic Day” on the College campus in April. The middle schoolers worked with Alvernia students in a SIFE organized and run ten-week program, to learn the business of sports and how to run a major sporting event.

“Olympic Day” was the culmination of the program, in which about 50 volunteer college students took orders from the Southern Reading Middle School student organizers of this special event for more than 130 kids.

According to SIFE president Lamar Jones, “Sport is one of the greatest interests for children of any age. So teaching these kids about the business of sports actually gets many of them excited about the wide range of opportunities that the world of professional sports has to offer.” Alvernia currently offers a Bachelors Degree in Sports Management.
