Professor Thorne was born and raised in Neptune, NJ, and still feels as though something is missing when the ocean is not close by. He acquired a BS degree at the US Military Academy at West Point, where he sang in the Chapel Choir and tended goal on the soccer team. He and his wife Karen served a tour in the Signal Corps in Germany, returned to the US where he obtained an MS in Electrical Engineering at GA Tech in Atlanta, and then served four years at the Military Academy, where he was an Assistant Professor in the Electrical Engineering Department. During that tour, he acquired an MBA in Management from CW Post College, following which he and his family left active duty and moved to the Reading, PA area. Here, he performed in various business and technical management roles for 22 years with AT&T and Lucent Technologies, after which he joined the faculty at Alvernia in the Math and Science Department in 2003. He teaches a variety of Mathematics courses (from Elementary Algebra and Survey of Math, to Statistics, Linear Algebra, and Calculus), as well as the First Year Seminar for freshmen. He and Karen have two daughters and two grandchildren (with one more “on the way”). They enjoy summers on the Maine coast, where they love to canoe, kayak, garden, and hike with their whippet, Ellie, and poodle, Winnie (oh yes--all of those things with the hounds…). If you’d like to get him “off subject” in class, ask about his photography or about the nature and origins of the universe.
