Rooted firmly in the liberal arts tradition, we focus on critical thinking, reading, and writing skills. Consider a major or minor in one of our disciplines! We will be happy to meet with you and offer any assistance we can.
Through the study of Theology, Philosophy, History, Political Science, and other Social Sciences, Alvernia’s Department of the Humanities fosters the pursuit of truth, the love of learning, and the achievement of academic excellence. As teachers and mentors, the faculty seeks to pursue a life of scholarship, to savor the joy of discovery, and to incorporate the products of both into the classroom. The department requires academic integrity of both faculty and students alike. Emphasizing self-reliant learning and the cultivation of critical thinking, the department strives to enhance everyone’s ability to engage the world creatively, analytically, and with moral integrity. Well-educated students of the humanities should be able to read carefully, write skillfully, speak eloquently, and conduct themselves with civility. In shaping their personal and professional lives, faculty and students are encouraged to esteem Francis of Assissi’s persistence, integrity, and concern for the common good.
