The English/Communication Department is responsible for The Alvernian, the student newspaper, which is published every other week during the academic year. Communication majors are required to work on the newspaper during at least one semester of their college career. All students with an interest in writing, photography, and/or marketing are encouraged to contribute to the paper. Students may take COM132 Journalism Workshop for one credit (course may be repeated) or COM432 Newspaper Production for 3 credits (course may be repeated). Other students may gain credit for community service.
The Alvernian office is located in Bernardine Hall 126. Equipment includes computers, a laser printer, and a scanner. The paper is produced on Aldus Pagemaker. Working on the student newspaper is an excellent opportunity to become a part of the Alvernia community, hone one's writing skills, and learn desktop publishing. The Zephyrus is the literary magazine published every other spring. It contains original creative work--poetry, fiction, essays, photography, artwork--by Alvernia students, staff and faculty. Department faculty serve as advisors and members of Sigma Tau Delta act as editors.
Sigma Tau Delta is the International English Honor Society. The purposes of this Society are literary and educational. The Society strives to confer distinction for high achievement in English language and literature in undergraduate, graduate, and professional studies.
