Arts & Sciences
Alvernia University’s Arts & Sciences Division serves two purposes. One, it’s home to our general education program, or core curriculum. These are courses required of all students that give you a breadth of knowledge and add an important dimension to your learning.
Core courses in the sciences, humanities, social sciences, and foreign languages open your mind to new ideas and new ways of thinking. They help you learn to think critically, communicate effectively, and solve complex problems—skills that are critical for career success and for a fulfilling life.
The core also affords you an opportunity for intelligent and reflective discussion of our
Franciscan tradition and its influence on an Alvernia education today.
Majoring in the Arts and Sciences
The Division’s second purpose is to provide in-depth learning for those seeking to major or minor in an Arts & Sciences field. This kind of intensive focus further hones your intellectual abilities while preparing you for a wide range of career paths.
Sometimes these paths follow directly from the major field, but sometimes they diverge. It’s not at all uncommon for, say, a philosophy major to go to medical school, or a biology major to become a lawyer. Indeed, by helping you develop an agile mind, these fields can give you great versatility as you plan your career.
