June Board Meeting

Each June, trustees conduct a two-day retreat on key strategic issues. This year’s featured topic focused on student engagement outside the traditional classroom. Kevin Kruger, the president of NASPA (the national association of student life professionals) and a leading expert on the subject, briefed the board on trends and best practices involving today’s college students. A panel of diverse students provided trustees with first-hand insights into ways to strengthen the Alvernia experience.

Trustees also spent significant time on the topic of board governance guided by Doug Orr, emeritus president of Warren Wilson College and a nationally recognized expert on the topic. A final session reviewed recommendations of the Board’s Ad-Hoc Committee on Long Term Strategy. This group provided valuable guidance for future strategy, based on two sessions involving a large number of both trustee and faculty leaders. I will report on this work in the State of the University address.

Beyond completing the annual evaluation of the president, Board actions are limited in June, but trustees gave preliminary approval to the board’s and president’s goals and the budget for 2016-2017, with final approval to be provided at the late September meeting. They also re-elected several trustees to second terms and affirmed Kevin St. Cyr and alumnus John Wanner as board officers.

Joining the trustees at their annual dinner in the Francis Hall atrium were several former trustees and the faculty leaders who served this year on the Board’s ad-hoc committees. Carl Anderson, Michelle Davis, and Joanne Judge were thanked for their exceptional trustee service.
