People

While we will formally welcome new faculty and staff at the August State of the University gathering and celebrate promotions and other honors, let me call attention to some new members of our community and recognize the efforts of some outstanding students.

We are pleased to welcome six talented new faculty members: Amy Banner, psychology; Catherine Hasson, nursing; Mark Kauffman, English/communication; Carol Kish, nursing, Amy Thomas, OT and Rachael Zeleny, English/communication. Rachel will also serve as the new Writing Program director.

We continue to attract outstanding leaders to serve on Alvernia’s board. New members include:

Steven Banco, M.D. - founding partner, Surgical Institute of Reading
Charles Flynn, Ph.D. - president of the College of Mount Saint Vincent (Neither a brother nor a cousin!)
Sr. Davis Ann Niski, OSF - executive director of the Bernardine Franciscan Sisters Foundation
Peter Rye - president of Brentwood Industries, Inc.
Gregg Shemanski - president and founder of Custom Processing Services
Patrick Shields - owner and CEO of Fromuth Tennis
Andy Ziolkowski - senior vice president, Carpenter Technology.

Institutional Advancement welcomed two new faces in July: Laramie Jung started her role as vice president of institutional advancement, and Julie Nolan began as director of alumni & parent relations.

David Updike, son of Pulitzer prize-winning author John Updike and himself a published author, is Alvernia’s new Updike Scholar in Residence for the ’14-’15 academic year. He will provide lectures, workshops and presentations throughout the year. Naturally, he will be one of the featured speakers at the John Updike Society Biennial Conference, which returns to Alvernia on October 2-5.

Alvernia had 19 athletes named to the MAC Academic Honor Roll. Kaitlyn Yoh (basketball) was named to the MAC All-Academic Team, while Aaron Benusis (baseball) became Alvernia’s fifth MAC Scholar-Athlete. At our Senior Athletic Banquet, Brian Parker (basketball) and Katelyn Gill (soccer) were named Outstanding Senior Athletes, while Nora Walsh (lacrosse), David Sloan (basketball) and Amanda Galanti (field hockey/softball) received coveted Athletic Director’s Awards.

A special welcome back to Gene Mitchell, who has returned to organize and process John Updike collection materials in preparation for the John Updike Society Conference this October.
