Community Engagement

The Berks County United Way recognized Alvernia with the LeVan Award for a non-profit that demonstrates outstanding dedication to the United Way. This year’s Alvernia campaign was led by co-chairs Toni Eckert and Tom Minick and raised a record $32,000, with a 77% participation rate.

The Holleran Center reports that student participation in days of service grew to more than 1,000 last year, a 34% jump in just two years. During the ‘12–‘13 academic year, 1,050 students participated in the university’s four days of service contributing in part to a record 21,300 hours of community service.

The O’Pake Institute recently received a $56,000 grant from the Hawley and Myrtle Quier Fund of the Berks County Community Foundation to support the Berks County Indicators Project. The project tracks key issues in the region including education attainment, healthcare, economic development, public safety, the environment and civic engagement.

Alvernia’s own celebrity master chef Doug Smith took the Golden Spoon Award at the Junior Achievement “So You Think You Can Cook” fundraiser held at Alvernia in June. Doug impressed all with the culinary sophistication demonstrated in his now famous Four Bite Surf N Turf. Bon appetit!
