Kudos

Alvernia’s Social Work Program has been ranked as one of the top 50 “Best Bachelor’s in Social Work, 2016 Programs” in the country by College Choice. College Choice rankings are made from a few different sources. First consideration is data taken from a nationwide survey published by the Higher Education Research Institute at UCLA where students evaluate academic reputation as well as school costs and post-graduate achievements on the job market. That data is then weighed with data from other public sources, including U.S. News & World Report, the National Center for Education Statistics, and PayScale.com.

Senior All-American Margaret Wentzel broke the career assists (42) and points (226) records for Field Hockey at Alvernia this fall. She finished her career tied for 13th in career points in the NCAA.

Fifty-three Alvernia student-athletes were named to the MAC Academic Fall Honor Roll. The academic honor roll is comprised of student-athletes who compete in a varsity level sport and registered a term/semester GPA of 3.20 (on a 4.00 scale) or higher. Women’s Soccer led the way with 15 honorees.

Men’s Volleyball opened its inaugural season on January 25, extending Lancaster Bible to five sets. The team put together a three-match win streak and opened the home schedule on Feb. 10 against Eastern Mennonite University. In front of a full house, Alvernia and EMU, the 10th ranked team in the NCAA Division III, battled in a very competitive 25-12, 24-23, and 25-22 match. The team is currently 9-9 on the season. Congratulations to the coaches and players for a fine first season.

The Office of Career Development had 272 appointments with students and alumni during the fall semester for resume critiquing, cover letter reviews, and mock interviews. In addition, 351 students participated in Career Development-sponsored events last fall.

Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks were back by popular demand, taking the Francis Hall Theater stage to a sold out crowd, March 15 (7:30 p.m.) as part of Alvernia’s Arts series and the annual Boscov’s Berks Jazz Fest. Bravo and Encore to Beth Roth and the fine arts faculty for sponsoring a terrific Arts at Alvernia season.

Alvernia has once again earned the Military-Friendly School designation.
