Community Engagement

More than 325 Alvernia students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends participated in the Martin Luther King Jr., Day of Service at 21 service sites throughout the City of Reading and Berks County. Sites included the Berks Leisure Area, Olivet Boys & Girls Clubs, the Reading Area Firefighter’s Museum, the Pagoda, and the Central Pennsylvania African American Museum. The next university-wide Day of Service commemorates Earth Day, April 9.

The Reading Collegiate Scholars Program continues to be well received by the Greater Reading Community. The program’s 15 students are fully funded thanks to the generous support of community members and organizations, and five of the 10 scholarships for students enrolling in the fall of 2016 have been secured.

Recipients of one of Alvernia’s top scholarships, the Shirley and Joseph Boscov Scholars awards, were announced recently. Established by Shirley, her son Jim and wife Cindy, the 2016 awards recognize 15 of the brightest seniors from Berks County’s high schools who have demonstrated academic excellence and community involvement.
