Board of Trustees

Alvernia’s trustees covered a range of important topics at its fall meeting. In addition to the annual tasks of reviewing year-end results from 2015-2016 and approving updated operating and capital budgets for 2016-2017, they also approved the Board and President’s goals for 2016-2017. The board also approved the comprehensive funding plan to support the PLEX, football, and renovations of the PEC. And they set an aggressive goal for themselves for fundraising contributions to the PLEX.

This fall’s enrollment situation was discussed in addition to action plans to support future enrollment growth. The board’s plenary session also included engaged discussion on the three strategic directions (endorsed by the board at its June meeting and reviewed with faculty and staff at the State of the University meeting in August) being pursued to support revenue growth, improve academic reputation and expand the Alvernia brand. An Executive Committee Sub-Committee on Strategy will continue to review and discuss related action plans later in the fall semester.

At lunch, Communication Professor Jodi Radosh and a group of students who attended the Republican and Democratic National Conventions last summer as interns joined us to share details of their experience. The students, participants in our popular Washington Center program, learned about the convention through an intense weeklong academic program followed by hands on learning as interns for national media outlets at the conventions. Their accounts were vivid examples of the value and importance of real world learning experiences for our students.
