President's Newsletter October 2015

We continue to expand international opportunities for students and faculty including a recent agreement with Australian Catholic University. A promising new partnership with Sacred Heart University in Dingle, Ireland will provide study abroad opportunities for our nursing students, while service trips to Brazil in cooperation with our Bernardine Sisters will supplement the 15 global locations already available in our Study Abroad program.

A new Prayer and Reflection Room has been created in the Franco Library. The room provides quiet space for persons of any (or no) faith to take time for contemplation, prayer, or spiritual reading. A formal dedication is planned for Oct. 29.

Classrooms on the fourth floor of Francis Hall have been upgraded as part of our teaching and learning improvements. The existing five classrooms were reconfigured into four larger rooms with new HVAC systems, furnishings and technology.

The Facilities and Campus Operations Department, formerly housed in the brick ranch home near Francis Hall, has relocated to the first floor of 951 Morgantown Road. Services include grounds, housekeeping, event set up, maintenance, transportation and distribution. Since students also receive packages at the Morgantown Road location, it is now a designated shuttle bus stop.

The Educational Planning Center has an expanded focus on writing thanks to a strong partnership with Dr. Rachel Zeleny, our director of writing. Ten student-writing mentors have been co-trained by Dr. Zeleny and our Academic Learning Specialist, Megan King. They add to the staff of 25 peer tutors who are focused on other subjects.

High definition security cameras have been installed throughout campus, including in parking lots, to enhance campus safety. The Office of Public Safety monitors them around the clock.

With the completion of construction near Francis Hall, 30 new parking spots have been created for faculty and staff in parking lot F. This frees up 20 parking spots for commuter students using lot C.
