Board of Trustees

With a number of new trustees in attendance, Alvernia’s board covered a range of important topics at its fall meeting. In addition to the annual tasks of reviewing year-end results from 2014-2015 and approving operating and capital budgets for 2015-2016, they also approved the Board and President’s goals for 2015-2016. Also approved was an amendment to the Faculty Handbook, recommended by the faculty, for a new classification of "professional specialist." This classification will be used with individuals who possess specific professional expertise and teach for the university but do not fit traditional academic classifications. Also discussed was a framework for exploring long-term, strategic partnerships and several options for increasing enrollment.

The highlight of the two days was the plenary session, “The Work of the Faculty.” Moderated by Tim Blessing (history), panelists included Louise Fura (nursing), Josh Hayes (philosophy), Ondra Kielbasa (biology) and Tom Porrazzo (athletic training). Each spoke on their teaching, student engagement and scholarly work. There were excellent questions and discussion afterwards, at the session and over lunch. Many trustees told me later how impressed and proud they were of our faculty and their efforts. This is the third time we have held this session, and it is always a big hit.
