Upcoming South Reading Youth Initiative Events
Spring 2012 Programming
The South Reading Youth Initiative, the signature program of the Holleran Center for Community Engagement is pleased to announce that Spring programming will begin on Monday, January 30th! Programming will run Monday-Thursday from 2:30-5:00p.m. and is located in Marciano Hall at St. Peters Church on South 5th Street.
Programming Partners and Events:
Yocum Institute for Arts Education - The Yocum Institute and South Reading have been partners since the program started in 2006. This semester the SRYI program will be teaming up with the Yocum Institute to prepare a play. The SRYI participants will write, prepare props, direct, and act in the play. This program will provide the SRYI students with hands-on arts experience. It will also help to support the student's growth both as a team members and as individuals.
South Mountain - The South Mountain YMCA will provide our participants with many opportunities for our SRYI participants to get up and get moving. We will work with South Mountain for a few weeks this spring and will have the chance to learn different camp songs and play a ton of team building games. The SRYI participants will also have the chance to go up the South Mountain for two programming days!
Transcultural Nursing - Each student in the Transcultural Nursing class here at Alvernia will present to our SRYI participants on a topic related to healthy living. Presentations in the past have included how to brush your teeth, fire safety, and hand washing. The presentations always include hands on activities to engage the students.
Service Learning/Library Visits - The SRYI will again have a service learning class working with us. Communications 270 taught by Michael Kramer will again team up with the SRYI program to help with tutoring and mentoring. In conjunction with this class the SRYI will be making monthly trips to the Reading Public Library.
Freshman Foundations - Each student in the Freshman Foundations class here at Alvernia will present to our SRYI participants on different topics. These students will also help serve as role models and will help with tutoring each Wednesday of the semester. They will be learning different tutoring skills and then teaching them to the SRYI participants.
