The Washington Center

Semester at the Washington Center
Alvernia University has a partnership with The Washington Center in Washington, DC which offers our students the opportunity to spend a semester in our nation’s capital, gaining valuable work experience in an internship and receiving a semester of credit toward their degree. To learn more about the Washington Center please visit their website.

Internships
The Washington Center offers an array of internship opportunities for students of all majors. While most people associate Washington with politics and government—and the Center does offer internships in those areas—there are also opportunities in communications, health care, criminal justice, law, business, the arts and many other opportunities. The Washington Center will help arrange an internship that addresses your interests. To learn more about the internships that are available, visit the website.

Courses
Each student who attends the Washington Center enrolls in a course usually related to their academic major. The Center typically offers 30 or more courses a semester.  However, if a student needs additional coursework, the Center can help in identifying and enrolling students in appropriate courses at universities in the DC area. In addition, some Alvernia students have enrolled in on-line courses here at the University while attending The Washington Center. The internship experience qualifies as coursework for some majors, but every student who enrolls at the Washington Center, with the approval of their academic adviser and department, receives 15 credits for attending the Washington Center. To learn more about the available courses please visit this website.

Housing
The Washington Center offers housing in student apartments in two easily accessible areas of the city. You’ll be living with students from other universities, including not only students from across the country, but for several foreign universities as well. To learn more about the student housing program visit this website.

Financial Aid
If you receive financial aid here at Alvernia, that aid should carry over to The Washington Center. You will pay tuition to Alvernia, who then pays for you to enroll at the center. If you have financial aid that goes toward tuition it should cover your tuition for the semester. But we highly recommend that you meet with the Alvernia Financial Aid Office to discuss your personal situation. In addition, there is some other financial assistance available through the center for which Alvernia students may be eligible.
