A core element of the Alvernia mission is to foster engaged citizens and ethical leaders with moral courage. We ardently believe that everyone has the potential to lead, that leadership is a life-long calling. Leadership is an intentional, continuing process that can both be taught and learned.
One of the core values of Alvernia is service. As a Franciscan University, we believe that the path to leadership is through service to others. Ultimately it is through serving others that we truly learn to lead.
Alvernia has helped form leaders in many different ways. We have graduate degree programs in leadership, which have been recognized both regionally and nationally. We offer leadership development services to regional businesses and non-profit organizations. We have co-curricular leadership programs designed to help develop the potential of our students. We have been nationally recognized for our community service efforts, where we combine real world experience with reflection and contemplation. We require every student to study ethics as a foundation to understanding leadership.
Alvernia is now in the process of integrating and coordinating all of these efforts. This will include the creation of a multi-disciplinary Department of Leadership Studies, which will link all of our leadership related academic programs and define core learning outcomes for those programs. It may include the creation of a formal, intentional undergraduate leadership education academic major, minor and/or certificate. It will link our community based and co-curricular programs to the core values and learning outcomes that we ascribe for all leadership education programs at Alvernia.
This effort will further our ambition of fostering engaged citizens and ethical leaders with moral courage. We will help form leaders for life.
