Facebook, Immaturity, and Presidential Threats

My hope is that by now most of you know of the poll put on Facebook that asked if the president should be assassinated. There are also groups on Facebook with such titles as "Let's Kill Bush with Shoes" with more than 400 members.

I have written about civility before; that is, I do not think these items have been posted by those who pose a serious danger to presidents present and past.

But can anyone get that some stuff just isn't funny?

  • It is interesting to interact with people who make a statement and then follow it up with something like, "I was just joking." I typically reply that if you need to tell me it was a joke, chances are it really wasn't funny.

Impersonal communications because of anonymity tend to allow or encourage a level of rudeness. Fast, easy communication seems as inclined to encourage animosity as to facilitate understanding.

One is free to speak, free to choose to be civil, and free to make bad choices as well as good ones.

  • When I first read about this all I could do is shake my head in amazement. Some people really do take the First Amendment way too far.
Another thing I though of, this is probably because I looked into the Secret Service as a career opportunity, is that they do not joke around about this in any way. They look into any threat no matter how small. And again maybe just me but I do not want the government digging through my personal life becasue of facebook. and in case your wondering, no I ddi not take part in the poll.

  • Some people are some childish. If you have that much time on your hands to waste on a facebook about killing the president than you have some issues.

  • I agree. While not a fan of the current administration, I was ALSO not a fan of the treatment of the Bush administration (whom I know had flaws). All that aside, assination is NOT something that should ever be considered. To say it is rude is a gross understatement.
