Master of Science in Occupational Therapy Five-Year Program
- B.S. in Health Science and Master of Science in Occupational Therapy

Program Highlights in Brief
Alvernia College is a Catholic, Franciscan college dedicated to the ideals of service in the helping professions. The five-year Bachelor of Science in Health Science and Master of Science in Occupational Therapy program, grounded in a strong liberal arts foundation, is designed to prepare graduates for entry into professional level occupational therapy practice. Graduates will acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to provide service in multiple settings requiring a high sense of responsibility, management of time and self, and competent occupational therapy skills. Furthermore, the program seeks to prepare graduates to think logically and creatively, act professionally and ethically, analyze ideas and situations, and problem-solve in their service
delivery as clinicians, supervisors, and managers. In harmony with the mission of the College, the occupational therapy program seeks to prepare learners for personal achievement, social responsibility, moral integrity, and spiritual fullness. The curriculum seeks to provide learning opportunities for students to discover and use their special gifts in providing service to others and to experience cooperative, multi-disciplinary working relationships.

Academic Quality
The occupational therapy program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) located at 4720 Montgomery Lane, P.O. Box 31220, Bethesda, MD 20824-1220; phone number 301-652-2682. Graduates are eligible to sit for the national certification examination for the occupational therapist administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT). After successful completion of the NBCOT exam, the individual will be an Occupational Therapist, Registered (OTR). Most states require licensure in order to practice; however, state licenses are usually based on the results of the NBCOT Certification examination. All Occupational Therapy students must complete Level II fieldwork within the time frame established by the program and a felony conviction may affect a graduate’s ability to sit for the NBCOT certification examination
or attain state licensure.

The repeat/delete option may be used one time for undergraduate occupational therapy courses and for one course only (COR or OT) at the graduate level.  Students who do not meet this requirement will be dismissed from the Program.

Students in good standing who leave the Occupational Therapy Program for less than one year may re-enroll if space is available.  Requirements for readmission to Alvernia College must be met.

Certifications, Clearances and Insurance Requirements
Prior to any fieldwork experience (level I or II), students are required to submit to the College, and to fieldwork centers (as applicable) proof of ownership of valid health & accident insurance coverage, certification in cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for infant, child, adult, & AED, and first aid.  Students are required to maintain ongoing certification.  Additionally, OT majors must obtain criminal record checks, child abuse history clearance, FBI fingerprint recording, and FBI clearances prior to fieldwork experiences.  Forms are available in the Occupational Therapy Program office.  Criminal background checks, and child abuse clearances must be done on an annual basis.  FBI checks as required.  Students who do not have the necessary valid clearances, checks, and certifications will not be permitted to enter the fieldwork experience, which will affect ability to complete coursework, and the Program.

Students should read the website link regarding misdemeanor/felony convictions and drug and health clearances.

Fieldwork Practicum
All level II fieldwork practicum must be completed within 24 months following completion of undergraduate academic fieldwork, and prior to the start of the graduate phase of the Program.

Health and Physical Challenges
Students with a health or physical challenge may be asked to obtain a physician’s statement that the condition will not be aggravated by or endanger clients/patients associated with the student in required coursework and fieldwork experiences.  Reasonable accommodations will be made for students to meet ADA regulations.
