These are the First-Year Seminar Instructor Teams that will be teaching this fall. You will be receiving more information about who your instructors will be at the fall semester approaches.

Dolores Bertoti

First-Year Seminar Program Coordinator

Dolores Bertoti grew up in the Philadelphia area, residing in Berks County for the past 27 years. She graduated from Temple University in 1975 with a BS. in Physical Therapy and went on to earn an advanced masters degree at the same university. Dolores Bertoti oversees the freshman academic experience through the College Success Program, coordinates and implements faculty development activities and serves as the Dean for the Center for Academic Advancement. Dean Bertoti also is a tenure associate professor at Alvernia College where she teaches in the areas of sciences. Dolores has authored over 20 publications and presents several workshops annually in the areas of applied neuroscience, kinesiology and electrotherapy.

Dolores is married for 26 years to William who is a teacher at Pottstown High School. They have a 22-year-old son, Christopher, who is a graduate of Duquesne University. They have a beautiful Labrador named Max.





Travis Berger


Travis Berger has been the Head Men’s Soccer Coach at Alvernia College since 2002. He received a B.A. in Criminal Justice and a minor in Sociology from Penn State University (1997) and he just recently earned a M.Ed. from Alvernia College (2005). Travis Believes in embracing all that life has to offer, so he has traveled to Europe twice, played professional soccer, attended the United States Marine Corps Officer Candidate School in Quantico, Virginia, worked as a juvenile probation officer, and raced motocross. He is passionate about working with youth and he has been making a difference in children’s lives since 1993. Travis is a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Society, Skull & Bones Society, and the Wilson High School Hall of Fame.


Wanda Copeland

Wanda Copeland, Director of Freshman Foundations and ACT 101, grew up in the city of Reading and graduated from Reading Senior High School. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree and has an MBA degree from Alvernia College.

Prior to becoming a part of Alvernia's faculty and staff, she was a business teacher and Assistant Girls Basketball Coach at Reading Senior High School.

She enjoys spending time with family and friends, reading, athletic events, movies and making people smile.




Laura Gingrich

Laura Gingrich has been the Associate Athletic Director/Senior Woman Administrator for the last 4 years, and the Head Women’s Field Hockey Coach for 6 years. She also teaches Wellness For Life and a First Year Seminar class. Laura received her undergraduate degree in Health and Physical Education from West Chester University, and her master’s degree in Exercise Physiology from Kent State University. Laura’s vision for athletics is to provide an opportunity for students to develop their athletic abilities as well as, develop civility, sportsmanship, and friendships within the college community.




Kevin Godfrey


Dr. Kevin Godfrey is assistant professor of Theology. He received a B.A. in Philosophy and French from the University of Minnesota (1980), an M.A. in Theology from The Catholic University of America (1984), and a Ph.D. in Historical Theology from Saint Louis University (1996). Dr. Godfrey has presented papers and published articles in the areas of Franciscan Studies, Christian Spirituality and the study of nineteenth century British theologian, John Henry Newman. He is a member of the American Academy of Religion and the Catholic Theological Society of America.


Gregg Gordon


As the Director of Residence Life, Gregg manages the daily operations of seven residential living learning evnironments, supervisors the Residence Life Professional Staff, and works closely with the 30 Resident Assistants in building a safe and positive residential community. Enriching student development, coordinating the housing assignment processes, and working with other College offices are just a few additional functions Gregg conducts on an ongoing basis.

Gregg began his career at Alvernia College in September 2003 after working four years at SUNY College at Old Westbury. He received his bachelors degree from SUNY College at Old Westbury and a Masters of Science Degree in Education from Queens College.




Corinne Lord


Ms. Lord is a graduate of Alvernia College with both her Bachelors in Psychology and Masters in Business from the school. She started working at Alvernia in 2002 as a Financial Aid Counselor and in August 2004 she became the Director of Career Services. She has lived in Reading all of her life and graduated from Exeter High School

Ms. Lord enjoys spending time with her friends and family and vacationing to new places. She likes reading, cooking, and decorating her home. She also enjoys spending time at home with her dog, Babe, cat, Maceo, and 4 1/2 foot Iguana named Tiny.

Polly Mathys


Polly Mathys has a BA from Case Western Reserve University and an MSEd from Temple University. She has been teaching Computer Information Systems at Alvernia for 16 years, after time in industry and post-secondary data processing education. She is passionate about student issues and excited about participating in the college success skills program.

Polly’s campus activities center around students: member of the Honors and Awards Committee, which celebrates student achievement; member of Judicial Review Board, which arbitrates student disciplinary issues; ardent Crusaders fan (She has her own lawn chair in her office for going to field games, and her own megaphone for use at basketball games – ask her about “Blah BLAH blah BLAH blah BLAH”).

Contrary to popular opinion, Polly does have a life away from campus, even though she usually hits her office about 5:00 AM every day. She and her husband cater to their four dogs, while keeping tabs on their daughters in Chicago and New Orleans.


Gail Metzger

Gail, who is from Indianapolis, IN received her bachelor's degree in psychology with a minor in biology from Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg, VA; and her master's degree for Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. She has studied and traveled in Europe, and participated in a 240 mile bike ride through Israel. Prior to joining the Alvernia community, she previously worked for nearly ten years as an occupational therapist at Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Hospital in Allentown, PA. Her special interests include hand therapy, head injury, ergonomics and industrial therapy. Gail lives in Souderton and enjoys golf, woodworking, softball, and creating stainglass.

Jodi Radosh

Dr. Radosh is the Director of the Freshman Experience. In addition, she is an Assistant Professor in the Communications and English Department. She teaches a variety communication and journalism courses. She also serves as the advisor for the Alvernia College student television program, “The College Show”, and is a co-advisor for The Alvernian, the college newspaper. Dr. Radosh is a professional journalist who has worked at several television stations throughout Pennsylvania including Philadelphia and Reading. Currently, she is a weekend reporter at WGAL-TV Channel 8, the NBC affiliate in Lancaster.

Dr. Radosh earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications and English from Rutgers College in New Jersey. She received both a Master in Journalism and a Ph.D. in Mass Media and Communications from Temple University. Her biggest fans are her husband Dr. Lee Radosh, a family physician at Reading Hospital, and her two year-old daughter, Rachel.

Kristen Strasnick

Kristen is the Director of Campus Ministry at Alvernia, which means she works with students and other departments on campus to promote a spirit of service, and she plans activities to enhance students’ faith experience.

Kristen grew up outside of Boston and is a HUGE Red Sox fan (it’s in her genes)! She earned her B.A. in History in 2002 from Saint Anselm College in Manchester, New Hampshire. Kristen then spent a year with the Capuchin Franciscan Volunteer Corps, doing service work at an outreach center for the homeless and economically poor in Baltimore. She earned an M.A. in Pastoral Ministry in 2004 from Providence College, and she spent the last year working in Residence Life and Student Activities at Cedar Crest College in Allentown. She is new to Alvernia, and is looking forward to a great first year!

Kristen lives in Allentown with her cats Chloe and Morgan, and she is marrying her fiancé Ken (and his cats Sebastian, Toby, and Lucy) next May.






Mary Ellen Wells

 

 

 


Mary Ellen Wells grew up in Eastern Massachusetts, where she graduated from Masconomet Regional High School. She then attended University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Mass. and earned a bachelor's degree in Accounting. Her JD was earned at Boston University School of Law where she later earned an LLM in Taxation.

Mrs. Wells enjoyed an eight year career in corporate law at the law firm of Bulkley, Richardson and Gelinas in Springfield, Massachusetts during which time she married her husband, Greg, whom she had met at UMass. In 1992 they moved to New Jersey where Mrs. Wells took some time off from her career to devote to enjoying the early ages of her two children, Brian and Abby. Mrs. Wells joined the world of academe as an Adjunct at Alvernia College in 2001. She is now finishing her third year as a full time Assistant Professor in the Business Department. She teaches law related courses at both the graduate and undergraduate levels and accounting courses at the undergraduate level.

She is a member of the Eastern Education Research Association, the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, the Academy of Legal Studies in Business and the Mid-Atlantic Academy of Legal Studies in Business for whom she currently serves as Secretary. In addition, Mrs. Wells is a member of the National Association of Pre-Law Advisors and the Northeast Association of Pre-Law Advisors. She also remains active in her community with involvement in the PTA, service as a Girl Scout Leader and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Wyomissing Public Library.
